Lucas Holds Press Conference to Discuss the Impact of Card Check on the Agriculture Community

Ranking Member Frank Lucas held a press conference to discuss and field questions regarding the impact the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) will have on the agriculture community and rural economies. Ranking Republican Lucas was joined by several of his colleagues in the House including Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN), Republican Chief Deputy Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA), Ranking Member of the Education and Labor Committee. Also, at the press conference were Chuck Conner, President and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, Tom Nassif, President and CEO of the Western Growers Association, and Steve Patricio, a California produce grower.

Agriculture Coalition Calls on Congress to Kill Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)

The newly minted Agriculture for a Democratic Workplace (ADW) is calling on Congress to join the more than 40-member agricultural coalition in opposing the Employee Free Choice Act.

“We are opposed to the Employee Free Choice Act because it would strip American workers, including most workers in the agricultural industry, of that right and replace it with a system where their choice of whether or not to join a union is no longer private, and their right to vote by secret ballot election is effectively annulled,” the coalition said in an open letter to Congress last week.

Agriculture Coalition Launched to Fight Employee Free Choice Act(EFCA)

Irvine, Calif., (February 17, 2009) – Today, a new coalition of national, regional and local agricultural associations covering virtually every sector of the industry launched a campaign to oppose the proposed Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) also known as the “card check” bill. Led by co-chairs Western Growers, the California Farm Bureau and the California Grape and Tree Fruit League, Agriculture for a Democratic Workplace (ADW) unveiled its Web site (www.coalitionforagriculture.org) with information and tools coalition members may use to contact legislators and voice their opposition to the EFCA.
